I love living in Brisbane and finding fun, new activities to enjoy with my family.
Bavarian fun for the whole family
Want to enjoy all the atmosphere, entertainment, good food and beer of Oktoberfest but the thought of drunken men in lederhosen is putting you off? Try going on Sunday for a fun, relaxed day out that is also suitable for the kids.
Sunday is Family Fun Day at Brisbane Oktoberfest, at the RNA showgrounds. There is all the entertainment that you would expect, with bell ringing, German dancing, a great band from Munich and of course some yodelling. The organisers have paid close attention to detail and in the main tent the traditional wooden flooring, ceiling wreaths and bunting make you feel like you have arrived in Munich. This is part of the reason why Brisbane Oktoberfest has been voted in the top 10 outside of Germany.
Traditional Dancing, part of the great entertainment
There are rides for the children including a jumping castle and dodgem cars. The petting zoo is really just a small pen with some chickens and goats in it, but to a four year old that can be pretty exciting. There is also face painting and a Punch and Judy puppet show. The rides area may not look like much during the day but it certainly keeps the little ones entertained.

The food is a meat lovers dream with German sausages, schnitzel and the famous pork knuckle. If the kids are not keen on those, there are also hot chips and pretzels. For those with a sweet tooth there is a wide range of cakes and of course the pretty, decorated gingerbread hearts.
German sausages and pork knuckle, leave the diet at home
The beer (who can forget beer at Oktoberfest?) is from the 340-year-old Tucher Brewery in Bavaria. There is also wine, schnapps and of course soft drinks for the kids. The best thing we found about going on the Sunday was the atmosphere was much more relaxed than on the busy Friday and Saturday nights. The beer was still flowing but at a slower pace and with not as big of a crowd there were no queues for the food, drink or bathrooms.
This is the last weekend of Brisbane Oktoberfest for 2012, Friday the 19th till Sunday the 21st. The Sunday Family Fun Day starts at 11am and finishes at 8pm, (gates close at 7pm). Tickets can be brought online until Wednesday or at the gate. For all the information plus details on the entertainment and menus go to the Brisbane Oktoberfest website.
