A taste of South East Asia has come to central Stafford with the opening of bringing a wave of fresh eastern-influenced flavours to Brisbane.
Oh Boy Bok Choy is the latest culinary venture from Brisbane hospitality specialists, John and Amanda Scott, who have a strong portfolio of successful and much-loved hospitality establishments across Brisbane.
Oh Boy is a sister restaurant to the already award-winning and community favourites Farmhouse Café at Kedron and its neighbouring Miss Sophia's Gelatteria.
The Layout
Oh Boy is situated on the busy Stafford Road, Stafford (in front of the skate arena)
Like all of the Scotts' projects, Oh Boy has a warm sense of atmosphere and perfection. In this venue, diners are transported to a South East Asian experience both visually and through the abundance of diverse flavours, influenced by Vietnam, China, Malaysia and Thailand, against a backdrop of fresh locally sourced produce.
The colour palette of the restaurant's decor is immersed in deep emerald, smoky silver/grey, black and white.
As well as individual tables, a long wall of comfy green bench seating lines one side of the space. The restaurant is licensed and the sleek bar is at the front beside the entrance. The open kitchen (lined with a curious trail of devil's ivy) along the front gives a view into where the culinary magic happens.
Artefacts are placed throughout to pay homage to the cultural traditions of Asia, especially the stunning circular lights at the front entry way and potted bamboo outside. Outdoor seating is also available at the front of the restaurant.
What's on the Menu
Now for the important part, the food. The creative menu includes a selection of starters or smaller dishes to kick things off - MYO Bao Buns, fluffy dumplings, larger meat dishes (with chicken, fish, pork and seafood), noodles and rice and sides. There is also a range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options to cater for everyone.
I ordered the pork and duck dumplings, ginger, garlic with shaoxing sauce with a side of rice. After placing our order, a complementary bok choy salad arrived as a welcome surprise which was packed with fresh, crisp produce. I reached for the gold cutlery and chopsticks to dive right in.
It was also pleasing to have the staff specifically ask whether any of our party had food allergies. While we didn't, it was just another example of how customers are placed at the centre of the dining experience. The team are pleasant and confident and helpful to ensure their customers' dining experience is enjoyable.
On first bite, it was obvious that the flavours were intoxicating and burst off the plate. Chef Hieu masterfully blends an abundance and diversity of flavours from sweet and sour and spicy to accompany the simplicity of noodles and rice.
Beyond my choice, menu standouts to look out for include Hieu's glazed master stock chicken, tempura enoki $26.50 and the Whiskey tamarind pork belly, grilled watermelon salad $27.50. If you can't make it to Oh Boy to dine, take away orders will also be available in August 2021.
The menu also offers a selection of tempting boutique Asian desserts to finish of your meal in style. Be sure to look out for Viet coffee panna cotta, fairy floss, sesame peanut brittle for $10.90 or Coconut jelly, spice strawberries and star anise syrup at $10.90.
What Else
Overall, my dining experience at Oh Boy Bok Choy was fabulous. I admit to going with high expectations and they were exceeded - great food, terrific atmosphere, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for!
At a time when international travel is largely off-limits, a visit to Oh Boy Bok Choy is like being transported to the East without leaving Brisbane. The sights, smells and flavours are authentic and bold and will not be silenced. That's a yes from me!
Oh Boy Bok Choy can be found at 264 Stafford Road, Stafford. Free parking is available at the rear of Stafford Central.
