Have you ever woken up one morning and thought "I'd love for a complete stranger to push a pointed piece of metal through my flesh before sticking jewellery in it?" You have? Me too! That's what spurred my trip to Off Ya Tree, a professional piercing parlour and 'alternative lifestyle store' located in Sydney.

I had visited their Oxford Street establishment roughly two years ago for a piercing, so I knew that they were a reputable establishment. However, it was not until I discovered them on Facebook and learnt of their regular piercing deals that I decided to enlist their services again.

[SECTION]Cost[/SECTION]
Their standard piercing package costs $25 for the piercing procedure plus the cost of jewellery (which can range between $15 - $35 dollars). Aftercare costs $10 and while you do not have to purchase it, it is most often advisable to help you care for your new piercing. The good news is that you only need to purchase one bottle of aftercare no matter how many piercings you are having done - one bottle goes a long way!

I was lucky enough to visit Off Ya Tree during their '$1 Piercing Madness' Special. While the cost of jewellery and aftercare remained the same, for a limited time the procedure only cost $1. I ended up getting 4 piercings (2 for each lobe) and the entire process cost me $74 (Jewellery @ $15 x 4, Procedure @ $1 x 4 & Aftercare @ $10 x1).

[SECTION]Pre-Piercing[/SECTION]

When I walked in, they were very friendly and discussed my piercings with me before I was asked to sign anything or pay. I had initially wanted slightly different piecings however, I was informed my ears weren't quite big enough - I'm glad they told me that before we started! I also discovered that typically they recommend to have less then 4 piercings preformed at once as it may impact the body's ability to heal itself. They warned me of this potential issue, however, advised me they would still perform the procedure if I was willing - which I was (on a side note: they've healed up perfectly).

I filled in my details and provided ID (you must be able to provide proof you are over 16 years to have a standard piercing procedure performed without a guardian), then I was ushered into the waiting room. I did not have to wait long before I was allowed to enter the small piercing room in the back of the shop. Unfortunately my partner was not allowed to enter with me (due to the small size of the room), however, during my previous visit I was allowed to bring a friend with me into the same room.

If you would like to have someone hold your hand or otherwise support you, don't be afraid to ask. I was visibly not nervous at all, thus it didn't bother me that I had to go in alone. The piercer was very friendly and I feel that if you explained to them that you were very nervous, they would let you have one person come in with you - one person, not twenty. It is actuality really quite a small room.

[SECTION]The Procedure[/SECTION]
The piercer cleaned my ears and marked small dots on my lobes where she thought the piercings should go. She then got me to check them in a mirror to see if I was happy - I was. I'm also happy to report that she wore gloves and used an autoclave to sterilise equipment (my personal rule is: no autoclave, no piercing).

The entire piercing procedure took less then five minutes - no, I'm not exaggerating. She was quick and very efficient, causing hardly any discomfort at all. She had me lay down with my head to the side and quickly pushed through the first needle through, followed by the second. She also helped me by advising when to breath in and out to help with pain management. Once both needles had gone through, she threaded through the jewellery. To be honest, she did it so quick I initially thought she had only finished one piercing. I then rolled my head over and she did the other side.

All done! I picked off my after-care and off I went with 4 new holes in my ears.

[SECTION]Post-Procedure[/SECTION]
It has now been roughly 2 months since the procedure has been completed and my piercings have healed up beautifully. I have had no complications what so ever.

For girls with long hair, I do advise you to wear your hair up (to the procedure and after), as it does have the potential to wrap around the new jewellery. I regularly found that my hair became tangled around the bellbars that were used in the initial piercing, particularly when I was sleeping. At times it could be quite difficult and uncomfortable to untangle.

My entire experience was very positive - Off Ya Tree proved to not only be low cost, but most importantly professional and hygienic.

If you're interested in obtaining a piercing I suggest you drop them a line via email or Facebook as they are more than willing to answer your questions.
