Food trucks are all the rage and the 'in' thing on the streets and at festivals, providing more than your average meat pie and hot dog. Presenting a range of gourmet food, they are now festivals on their own and the newest is 'Off the Eaten Truck' in western Sydney.
All in the name of Movember, raising awareness of various cancers, this food fest comes to us thanks to Rooty Hill RSL Club and The Bearded Bakers from Knafeh Bakery. If you haven't seen these baker brothers then now's the chance to, as not only do they make a wonderful sweet cheese dessert with pistachios and maple syrup, they also sing and dance at the same time. I recently caught them at Parramatta and they are so lively and entertaining and a good distraction whilst waiting in line.
The bearded bakers are just one of over 30 food trucks that will roll up for this weekend festival with laid back country fun. Mama Linh's will bring reinvented Vietnamese street food that includes beef brisket Pho and pulled pork rolls, among other savoury delights.
Happy as Larry will produce their special range of Neapolitan pizzas from a wood-fired oven and you can wash it down with some hops from the double decker bar, Carlton Dry Deck, the custom wine bar or one of many pop-up thirst quenchers. Other popular food trucks include Cantina Movil with their Mexican fare evoking a fiesta wherever they roam, Mister Gee selling quality burgers, StroopBros and their spiced waffle dough smothered with warm caramel, Who Gives a Schnitz (love the name) with various chicken schnitzel feasts and Original Choco Wrap making crepes with decadent toppings of Nutella, chocolate shavings, fruit and whipped cream.
On top of all this food, there will be top Sydney chefs cooking up a storm in the 'Five Senses Laneway', providing an extraordinary sensory experience you don't normally see at a food truck festival.
Live music and entertainment abounds all day with the likes of artists Christie Lamb, Melanie Dyer, Mickey Pye, Rory Ellis and Ben Ransom performing pop, rock and country tunes on the outdoor stage. Don't forget the cowboy boots as there's sure to be some bush dancing at this country shindig.
Children will be kept occupied in a fun zone with a petting zoo, an epic jumping castle, slides and a heap of activities tailored especially for them.
Later in the evening, inside the Fred Chubb Lounge of the Rooty Hill RSL, country music legend James Blundell makes an appearance on stage. With several albums and awards to his credit, a good time is sure to be had.
But wait that's not all. On the Saturday, stand-up comedian and lovable larrikin Hughesy, aka Dave Hughes (Ten's The Project and Nine's 2016 host of Australia's Got Talent), will present his new comedy show 'Sweet' in the Tivoli Showroom of the Club from 8pm.
Tickets are $35 per person (18yrs & over).
Don't miss this biggest gathering of food on wheels that delivers a great time whilst supporting men's health issues. Entry is free but gold coin donations are welcome with proceeds going to the
Movember Foundation . Start growing your mo if you haven't already and have a bit of fun with it. Style it, dye it or recreate a famous and iconic mo (maybe a Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx or Yosemite Sam) to help raise funds for this cause.
Getting there
Regular shuttle buses will run from Mt Druitt train station whilst those driving can find some free parking available in the surrounding streets.
