Oddball: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection was written and illustrated by cartoonist, illustrator and New York Times bestselling author, Sarah Andersen. It is 112 pages long, features black and white illustrations, and was published by Andrews McMeel Publishing on 14 October 2021. It is the fourth book in her semi-autobiographical comic strip,
Sarah's Scribbles, which finds humour in her life as an introvert and with her struggles with social awkwardness.
In
Oddball Sarah uses her unique brand of humour to shine a light on various aspects of millennial life like procrastination, not caring about your appearance, social media addiction, artist culture and slang words. She also touches on themes like common women's interests, the difference between older and younger generations, fear of failure and the cuteness of cats.
I enjoyed
Oddball but also felt a little bit disappointed by it. I didn't like that some of the comic strips were repeats and I felt like the theme of the book that "millennials are strange" was a little bit weak. I've been a big fan of
Sarah's Scribbles for years. But after reading four books in the series, the comic strip is starting to feel a bit stale to me. I feel like I've heard most of the jokes before. At the same time, there were still some moments in the book that made me laugh, like the "Time Traveling" comic strip where Sarah travels to the future and finds it on fire. She comments
"Whoa! This sure is grim. Glad I don't live a thousand years in the future" and a man behind her replies
"This is 2025."
