Event:
The charity Room to Read believes that 'world change starts with educated children.' Since 2000, they've had a positive influence on 7.8 million children in ten different developing nations, by building 1,650 schools, setting up 15,000 libraries, distributing 13 million books and helping 22,500 young females to finish secondary school.

Berkelouw Books will be doing their bit to help on October 26. They'll be hosting talks in seven Sydney stores, featuring nine well-loved Australian authors. Entry is free, with a percentage of all book sales going straight to Room to Read.

"We love bringing authors and families together authors keep children engaged with reading and bring books to life," explained Robert Berkelouw. "This is our opportunity to take action so that all children around the world get the opportunity to learn to read."

Doors will open at 10.30am, with talks beginning at 11am at all locations. Susanne Gervay and Deborah Abela will speak at Paddington; Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell at Balgowlah; Sarah Davis at Leichhardt; Oliver Phommavanh at Mona Vale; John Larkin at Dee Why; James Knight at Rose Bay; and Pamela Cook (author of Blackwattle Lake) at Cronulla.

Berkelouw's event is part of Room to Read Octobooks campaign. "Our October campaign is a worldwide opportunity to address the fact that 775 million people in the world are illiterate and that 67 million primary school aged children woke up this morning and didn't go to school," said Cory Heyman, Room to Read's Chief Program Officer. "By joining or leading a local event, participants can be part of the solution to this social injustice, sending a wave of empowerment across Asia and Africa, and have the chance to reflect on how a simple action when multiplied can have transformative effects."
