Since writing up Spring Holiday Activities for Kids (still ongoing from 21 Sep to 1 Oct 2020 for the holidays) the Stonnington Library and Information Service have come up with a list of their October activities . I admit to having a penchant for Stonnington events, because it's my council, my backyard and my playground and I've attended many a great Library events IRL. While on the subject of kids events, a new one snuck in for October with bookings opening at 10am on 20 Sep 2020. It's the Book Week Book Party on Tue 20 Oct 4-5pm. See books like you've never seen them before with comedian Sean Murphy. Suits ages 5-12 years.

Basking in the contentment of where I live, a 60 second walk away from Chapel Street, if you are part of this Council and want to have your say to help shape the preliminary concept designs for the new Prahran Skate Park , a facility that serves both young and older skateboarders. CLICK HERE for this first round of community involvement about what's important to you in a Skate Park , and what you'd like to see in the new world-class version. Survey closes Monday 21 September 2020, so hurry and make it count! While there you'll also find a survey for the Prahran Aquatic Centre Redevelopment you can participate in.

Good news that the Library is back and somewhat operational; opening on weekends from 19 September but continuing to offer a delivery service for the vulnerable. The October events are filled with themes of Get Connected (computer & travel), Book Chat (author talks & book club), Open Book, History Matters and more which you'll find in the Event Section of Facebook and under What's On on the Website . Unfortunately not every event listed on the website is on Facebook, hence best to check both, and of course almost all Library events are FREE but many may need REGISTRATION to save your spot or give them an idea of numbers attending.

Some of the events I'd like to highlight are as follows. Follow the event links to find out more, stay in touch for updates, or to register.

  • Thu 8 Oct 10.30am-12.30pm - Resume Workshop - an important event considering how many of us need to get back into the workforce after this pandemic.
  • Thu 15 Oct 1-2.30pm - Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality - VR and AR for the curious! Learn about Apps that'll change your everyday life and how you can travel in VR without leaving home.
  • Sat 17 Oct 10-11am - The Thrifty Gardener - Be inspired to reuse waste materials in your garden to help the environment and make your garden beautiful, functional and productive on a budget.
  • Tue 20 Oct 11am-12.30pm - Home Automation - learn how you can control your devices at home remotely.
  • Thu 29 Oct 10.30am-12pm - Online Games and Brain Training Apps - put your mental skills to the test and keep your mind fighting fit. These are the types of games I adore! Love the challenges!

  • In Create, Explore, Play at Home , Library staff have also selected a range of their favourite activities for adults and kids, so it's an easy find. This page like all the event pages are updated regularly so it's best to bookmark them so you don't have to think about it year-round, and will have activities for the whole family year-round at your fingertips. If nothing else, some of the activities may inspire you to create your own at home. THE KIDS have a whole range to consider that'll inspire and challenge while having fun. I personally love the How To in making an Animal Sock Puppet . THE ADULTS have a world of creative activities to explore as well, including making your own DHHS approved Face Mask.

Below is a preview of a few other events that have filtered in for November as follows.

  • Sat 7 Nov 10am-12pm - Small Space Gardening - turn your courtyard, balcony or front step in to a productive little garden with some clever planning.
  • Thu 19 Nov 1-2.30pm - Cloud Based Storage - Get to know some popular Apps you can use to store your documents and photos on the cloud.
  • Thu 26 Nov 11am-12pm - Learn a Language Online - with over 70 languages to learn from, learn how to download the Mango Languages App.

  • I absolutely adore this Library service and I'm continuing to learn German through my Stonnington Library Card for free. I love its commonsensical approach. With everything online making it easier to cross borders and join other libraries, I'd join just for this free languages service. It suits someone who loves languages, like me.
