North Queensland's finest seafood and dining experience
As the temperature drops here in the south of our great state, the climate is just right up in Far North Queensland. It's this time of the year that a long weekend up in Cairns is the perfect solution for beating the Winter's blues.
My husband and I did just that a couple of weekends ago and we had a lovely time exploring the wonderful 'foodie' scene in and around Cairns.
Ochre Restaurant boasts waterfront dining with modern Australian cuisine, sourcing the freshest seasonal ingredients produced locally in North Queensland. It also was the 2016 winner of the Queensland Tourism Award for Tourism Restaurant and Catering Service.
A quick survey over the menu, my husband and I both agreed to share the Seafood Platter ($76/person). This gave us a taste of tropical North Queensland and all it has to offer, plus we both love seafood.
Our seafood platter was 2 courses with each course (entree and main) presented beautifully on a 2 tiered platter. The entree platter consisted of freshly shucked oysters, smoked salmon, spiced calamari skewers with chilli lemon myrtle dipping sauce and salt and native pepper leaf crocodile and prawns.
We slowly enjoyed all the deliciously tasty items for the entree course along with a lovely bottle of white wine. We have to say that everything was very delicious and we were happy with our choice so far.
The restaurant is cosy yet relaxed which caters for romantic dinners for 2 or for a family or group gathering in a neat and atmospheric dining location. It also has a full bar and extensive wine list to choose from.
We devoured our way through Queensland spanner crab with tomato and lemon myrtle chilli sauce with coconut rice, Tempura gulf bugs on lemongrass skewers with green papaya salad, Tempura barramundi and sweet potato fries. What a mouth full and what a great meal.
Both my husband and I agreed that this was by far one of the best seafood platters that we have eaten. The staff were quite knowledgeable in regards to the food and wine and were friendly and attentive when needed.
We have recommended this restaurant to our friends and family to visit when in Cairns. It is open for both lunch and dinner, 7 days a week with live music advertised on the first Sunday of the month from 1pm to 5pm. It would be a great place to chill out and great place to revisit.
