Perched at the highest point of the coastal township of Ocean Shores, the Ocean Shores lookout provides staggering 360 degree views spanning to the townships of Pottsville on the Tweed Coast to the north and Cape Byron to the south. I've been coming to this spot for years and it's a great spot for reflection and pondering at any time of day. Not only are there unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, you can also gaze behind at the lush Byron Bay hinterland and the closest mountain nearby: Mount Chincogan. On a clear day the 'thumb' - more commonly known as Mt Warning is also visible, although much further away.

The lookout is set atop a ridge with barbecue and picnic facilities at the car park and a nice walk through stately Fig Trees leading up the grassy knoll, where the million dollar views really make their impact. While photographs won't do the views enough justice, simply standing atop Devine's Hill - named after a local family who bought the land here many decades ago - allows you to soak in the amazing vistas ahead of you. You can cast your eyes downward to Brunswick Head and the lush coastal rainforest of the Brunswick Heads nature reserve , a stunning nature lovers paradise and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Direct your eyes south-east and you will eyeball the most easterly point on the Australian mainland - Cape Byron. If you make the trip to Ocean Shores lookout at night, Byron Bay Lighthouse atop the headland will flash every 15 seconds. (I've counted) and adds just a little bit more romance to a place that is already perfect for night time lovebirds.

There is a paved path that spirals down the the bottom of Devine's Hill and is a relatively easy walk with nice gardens including flowering bougainvillea, grevillia and banksia trees, and other coastal flora. Its also a good place for bird watching as lorikeets and other birds are drawn to the nectar on the flowering plants. One of my favourite things about this place is that it's never too busy. It's not Byron Bay, it's not Mt Cootha, and you won't ever have to compete with others to get the best view, or a comfortable park bench to take it all in. There are benches throughout the park, with one of my most favourite being a bench set amongst the fig trees which has a real southern 'wind in the willows' kind of feeling. I have many memories of this bench from my teenage years - perhaps not appropriate to share here.

If you're in the area its more than worth making the pit stop at the Ocean Shores lookout. It's ultimate relaxation packaged with all the facilities you would expect from a public park. Go on - call in and make your own memories today.

is located at Tongarra Drive, Ocean Shores. It is sometimes referred to as Lions Lookout, or Devine's Hill Lookout.
