Ocean Connection is an exhibition of glass art by Joanna Bone, Scott Coleman, Keith Rowe and Kayo Yokoyama exploring each artists connection with the ocean. Each of the four artists has mastered a different glass technique which informs their unique practice.
Works in this exhibition are inspired by ocean creatures and plants local to the Moreton Bay region, which play critical roles in marine ecosystems. The enduring but fragile nature of glass and the depth of pattern beneath its surface, reflects the fragile existence, delicate balance and intertwined nature of relationships in our environment.
Kayo Yokoyama immigrated to Australia from Japan in 1997 to pursue her dream of studying art. She did undergraduate and post graduate studies at Sydney University, Sydney College of the Arts, culminating in a Master of Fine Arts in 2012.
Keith Rowe was born in New Zealand in 1952 and he became interested in art at the age of twelve with his first experiments in photography. He came to Sydney in the 1970s and trained in photography and glass at Sydney College of the Arts from 1979 to 1981.
Scott Coleman received a Certificate of Foundation Visual Arts in 1998 and then a Diploma of Glass Design and Production in 2001 from Wanganui Regional Community Polytechnic in New Zealand.
Joanna Bone completed a BA, with 1st class Honours in Glass Design at Wolverhampton University, UK in 1998 then she completed an MA in Glass and Ceramics from The Royal College of Art, London, UK in 2000.
These four artists now call Australia home and have found a connection through the life giving complexities of water and the inherent beauty in all its manifestations.
The exhibition runs from 05 February 2016 - 05 March 2016 at Redcliffe City Art Gallery with Artist Floor Talks taking place on the 6 February 2016 from 10.30am - 11.30am.
