Set in 2077, where a futuristic earth is dying and desolate, Oblivion captivates and haunts you visually. Not surprising, given director Joseph Kosinski's best known work is computer generated imagery and graphics.
Oblivion throws in a star studded cast, with Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) as one of the last engineer's stationed on Earth with his partner Victoria Olsen (Andrea Riseborough). The hi-tech drones Jack repairs, adds a foreboding presence that intrigues and draws you in.
Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko), brings an unanticipated love story and provides some unanswered questions to Jack Harper's recurring dreams. Whilst, legendary, Morgan Freeman plays Malcolm Beech, a resistance leader that holds the key to a sinister A.I. plot, which all lends itself to a relatively interesting storyline. However, with a tad of predictability setting in by the third act, is it enough to engage sci-fi audiences?
Overall, hard core science fiction fans cannot refute the visual spectacle Oblivion brings, with a pleasing balance of action and dialogue. However was Tom Cruise the right choice, does his character bring the emotional depth needed to convincingly portray Jack Harper? Reminiscent of Wall-E and Total Recall, I think it's worth seeing for yourself to decide.
