Somewhere between the Angas and Bremer Rivers, less than ten minutes drive from the township of Langhorne Creek, lies one of the Fleurieu Peninsula's special secrets.

It goes by the name of Oasis Gardens and its appearance is exactly that. A cascading waterfall, tranquil pond and lush palms are a stark contrast to the surrounding farming land and vineyards. It truly is an oasis.

The entrance, from Langhorne Creek Road, takes the form of a palm-fringed driveway. Owners Chris and Michael Steinert began planting palms around thirty years ago and now they have around 3000 of them on their property.

We visited Oasis Gardens for lunch recently. We were greeted by Michael who showed us to our table next to a window that looked out over a lush, tropical-style garden. For a moment, I was transported back home, in my mind, to Darwin.

Michael presented menus and informed us of the lunch specials, which, at $15.90, seemed excellent value.

Since we were in the heart of the Langhorne Creek wine region, it seemed silly not to order a glass of wine each. And of course, it was still the summer holiday season. Armed with these two solid excuses, we ordered a glass each of local rosé and shiraz to enjoy with our shared dish from the main menu. The baked camembert came with brandy-roasted pear, honey and thyme. This delicious combination of flavours was served with toasted ciabatta.

Although tempted by various dishes on the à la carte menu, we decided to take advantage of the specials. A sneak peek at neighbouring (appropriately distanced) tables, assured us that the sizes and presentation of the specials was generous and appealing.

We chose the beef and red wine homemade pie, served with rustic fries and a garden salad and a chicken, asparagus and lemon crepe, drizzled in sage butter and also served with a salad.

The dishes were beautifully presented, the crepe was light, the pie was tasty and the salads were fresh and crisp. Pleasurable in every way. Except that we were too full to enjoy the enticing desserts from the main menu or the coffee and cake special. Michael had told us that all cakes and desserts were made on-site by his daughter, Chef Tara and I had looked forward to trying something from the selection.

I'll save dessert and cake for another day. Fortuitously, Oasis Gardens offers a High Tea with a wide variety of tempting treats, all made on site. I plan to book in with my bestie next week.
