Where do you go when the mercury is soaring and you have a tetchy toddler to entertain? Tucked away in suburbia (Park Road, Oakleigh to be exact) is Oakleigh Recreation Centre. From November 1st until the end of March their aquatic programme is in action and guaranteed to cool off even the sweatiest of sweaty people.

For a mere $5.50 per adult (the aforementioned toddler is free) you can choose from the 50m lap pool, the multi-purpose swimming pool, the toddler pool, or the jewel in the crown; the kids' splash pad. The latter is complete with enough tipping buckets, fountains, sprinklers, and twirly thingies to keep your offspring occupied for hours.

The water temperature is blissful (I can think of no other way to describe it). Ranging from 27 degrees in the lap pool to a balmy 31 degrees in the toddler pool, it is crying out to be jumped into. There is ample shade, clean changing facilities and toilets (yes I'll admit the seats were a bit soggy), a small playground in the guise of a pirate ship and a cafe selling hot and cold food. I can't give you the low down on that I'm afraid as ever the dutiful wife, I had packed a picnic.

On the scorcher of a day that we discovered this gem, to my two year old's immense joy, we managed to coincide with the appearance of a roving balloon/bubble maker extraordinaire. Could it get any better? Yes. Apparently. During the school summer holidays 2012, Oakleigh Recreation Centre also added an inflatable Dive Slide, Dive In Movies and DJs to their repertoire - not bad at all.

We managed to kill at least 4 hours at this poolside paradise, which is no mean feat with a terrible two in tow. Opening hours are from 6am weekdays, 8am weekends, and 9am on public holidays. So next time the temperature tops the twenties, don your bathers and dive on down to Oakleigh.
