During summertime Sydney can be a haven for relaxing days by the beach or picnics in the park.
However, it can also mean spending half an hour searching for a parking spot, towel-to-towel traffic on the sand and lines for just about everything.
This summer, why not spend a day out of the city and take a drive down to
.
Located in Sydney's western suburbs, is a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle to relax and enjoy a day with the family.
The beautiful 90 hectare land hosts an array of native trees and plants, including "
Grey Box and Forest Red Gum open forest and woodland ... [the] ground cover is diverse with many native herbs and grasses ... [and] wetland species also occur in the creek and along the streambank" (
Blacktown City Council website ).
Not only that, Nurrangingy also offers a stunning waterfall, that leads onto a vast and picturesque lake.
is the perfect place to bring children, as unlike many parks, skateboarding and bike riding are allowed, and there are even assigned tracks to use.
For younger children, there are also four wonderful and safe play areas that have recently been upgraded and were redesigned by landscape designer
Fionna Robbe who specialises in playground design. The playgrounds are still brand new, having only been officially opened in October 2011.
If you enjoy having a picnic lunch, then you'll enjoy Nurrangingy's BBQ and picnic areas surrounded by the shade of the beautiful bushland, with bathroom facilities and shaded pavilions for warmer days.
For those interested in history, Nurrangingy contains;
"
historically important areas, including areas of Aboriginal significance. The reserve also features picnic areas, formal plantings and large areas of remnant bushland" (
Blacktown City Council website ).
There is even a chance to see demonstrations by
Mr Gordon Blackwell , a real blacksmith.
With something for everyone, and a peaceful escape from the city, Nurrangingy Reserve is the perfect day trip these Christmas holidays.
