at Adelaide Festival Centre is presented by Japanese Embroidery Center, Atlanta USA and Kurenai-Kai Japan, and is part of the OzAsia festival in August. The exhibition will showcase hundreds of examples of antique handmade textiles dating back to the Edo Period in Japan (the 1600s).

Before factories and the industrial revolution, when Europeans first arrived in Asia, along with the spices and flavours, the new arrivals were gobsmacked by the beauty of the textiles, especially the silks and embroidery.

Every stitch was a moment in time and every design had an expression of culture - whether that be the village they came from, the ancestral line the skill was passed down through or the status they had to wear a garment which took dozens of artisans' months to make.

It was the West who copied the East, as can be seen through the 18th and 19th Centuries in the era of Jane Austen. The Industrial Revolution in Europe stole the designs from the Asians and put them into the filth and misery of London factory. (So, it's a little ironic when Europeans today accuse Chinese of the same).

We now live in a world of fast fashion and deadlines. Once the times spent stitching and the skill of the artisan determined price. These days the brand name and marketing determine brand no matter who made them or where. Once you looked at the finest of the stitching, now you look at the brand name. It's certainly worth learning about the months (or even years) and skills taken to a complete a piece of kimono fabric and appreciate why they are now seen as work of art.

For anyone interested in fashion or textiles, this exhibition will open a world of beauty and thought, about the way things should be done.

The exhibition will be held at the Adelaide Festival Centre. For more information click here .
