Bringing the best of British theatre from stage to screen, National Theatre Live invites a global audience to enjoy West End shows, starring James McAvoy, Andrew Scott, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Gwendoline Christie.
X-Men star James McAvoy takes to the stage in a new adaptation of
Cyrano de Bergerac . When Cyrano sets out to win the heart of his true love Roxane, he has to get past the problem of his large nose, so he relies on the power of his personality, and his way with words, as he blends poetry with passion. Edmond Rostand's classic is adapted by Martin Crimp and directed by Jamie Lloyd.
Andrew Scott, known for his TV roles in
Sherlock and
Fleabag, stars in Noël Coward's comedy
Present Laughter playing the actor Garry Essendine, who is busy preparing for an overseas tour. As friends and lovers compete for his attention, he is caught up in a chaotic whirlwind of mixed emotions and soul-searching. Directed by Matthew Warchus and broadcast live from The Old Vic in London.
The award-winning one-woman show that inspired the BBC's hit TV series of the same name,
Fleabag is written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Vicky Jones. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café to run, Fleabag struggles to sort out her life, in her own self-styled comical fashion.
Shakespeare's romantic comedy
A Midsummer Night's Dream is filmed live from the Bridge Theatre in London, where the stage is transformed into an enchanted forest with atmospheric effects of mists and moonlight. A feuding fairy King and Queen of the forest cross paths with four lovers and a troupe of actors. The royal couple decides to meddle with the lives of these mere mortals, creating a tangled web of intrigue, mistaken identities and classic comic moments. Gwendoline Christie, who played Brienne in
Game of Thrones, stars as Titania in an immersive production directed by Nicholas Hytner.
