There were 2 events last Sunday, with perfect weather, after a full moon on the Friday and a thunderstorm Saturday night. The first event was the 1km swim straight out in front of the Bondi Pavilion and the second was a 2km swim which was swum out and around a number of buoys positioned in a big triangle out beyond where the famous Bondi Beach waves break.
It was a fun day and one I was very happy to sit and watch, whilst I gladly thought about entering future swims.
Today, whilst lolling around in the Bronte Beach pool, someone said to me that there is another swim coming up this week at Coogee. It was too late for me to be motivated enough to enter and learn the swim path, but it is a good idea to know which swims are coming up, so you can make the effort to study the course and make sure you've put plenty of training in.
So, the Coogee SLSC Island Challenge is in fact this Sunday and starts from Coogee Beach. There are 4 main swim categories, the 2.4 km swim around Wedding Cake Island, the 1km Splash and Dash, a Junior Dash swim of 800m and a sprint swim of 200m called the Dash for cash.
Registrations may be taken as late as on the day (Sunday 15 April) between 7.30am and 8.30am. The first event starts at 8.30am and the main swim of 2.4 km begins at a leisurely 11am. Online entries close at 3pm Saturday.
Forster and Mollymook also have swims this Sunday.
Following Coogee, there is a swim at Terrigal (2km), Warriwood (2.2km) and Coogee - Bondi (5km). These are the swims in NSW for April. There is one listed at the end of May that looks absolutely brilliant in May and a great feat to achieve if you are fit (or crazy) enough to enter. That one is the South Head Roughwater Swim (11km) starting from North Bondi.
