An inner southern suburb of Melbourne, St Kilda was shunned by locals for many decades due to its reputation for druggies and prostitutes. Today, this picturesque area of Port Phillip Bay has been revived into a fashionable cosmopolitan bayside suburb with expensive homes, alfresco restaurants and cafes, entertainment venues and beaches. A short ride on Tram 96 from the city and you're arrived at one of the main tourist destinations of Melbourne.
One of my preferred places to stay and explore St Kilda is Novotel Melbourne St Kilda. Novotel is a hotel brand of Accor, the world's leading hotel operator with more than 4,400 hotels and 530,000 rooms in 92 countries.
This hotel offers the 4-star comforts of well-appointed rooms, facilities, onsite restaurant and bar, state-of-the-art business centre in the hotel foyer, heated swimming pool and gym, and excellent and friendly service consistent with the Novotel brand.
No other hotel can boast a premier beachside position in St Kilda. Novotel Melbourne St Kilda is in the heart of the Esplanade and walking distance all the shopping, food, entertainment and attractions of this seaside suburb. A short walk and you're in Acland Street, a precinct that is famous for its alfresco cafes, continental cake shops, ice cream parlours and fashionable shopping. Nearby is also Fitzroy Street with its restaurants and bars. The landmark and most famous attraction of St Kilda Pier originally build in 1853 is also within walking distance from the hotel. It houses an iconic kiosk which offers panoramic views of the bay and penguins that have made the nearby breakwater their home. The area makes for a romantic walk along the beach or pier, taking in the sunrise or sunset.
There are also pathways for walking and cycling that lead towards the scenic foreshore and St Kilda Marina with its waterfront restaurants. The Sunday Art and Craft Market, shows at the Palais Theatre and the historic and iconic amusement centre of Luna Park are all nearby the hotel. With the tram stop just opposite the hotel, you are a short trip away from the city and Albert Park Lake which houses the annual Australia Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Whether you're on a romantic getaway, family holiday or business trip, Novotel Melbourne St Kilda has 211 guest rooms and suites with many offering breath-taking views of Port Phillip Bay. All rooms are equipped with television, coffee/tea making facilities, bath and shower, mini-bar and refrigerator, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, air-conditioning and heating, work desk and wired or wireless broadband access. The best thing about the rooms are they tend to be larger than those in Melbourne CBD with natural light through large windows, which are also great for watching the sunsets over the bay. If you're a member of Le Club Accor Hotels there are also regular price promotions and specials.
The Grill 3182 Restaurant and Bar is decked out in simple contemporary style to create a casual and relaxing environment to enjoy a drink or a meal. It also has a terrace that offers ocean views while dining. Apart from its hearty selection for buffet breakfast at AUD35 per person, the restaurant menu features fresh produce and grills for lunch and dinner.
Meeting and Events
Novotel Melbourne St Kilda also caters to meetings and events with 12 function spaces to choose from that can accommodate up to 300 persons. A major selling point is the ocean views and outdoor terrace areas available in many of the function rooms. Another is the pillarless layouts and state of the art facilities in the rooms. It also has an exhibition space for up to 32 booths.
