Located right around the corner from Wahroonga Station on Sydney's North Shore Line is independent bookshop, Novella Fine Books, Cards and Gifts. The store has only been open since September 2010 but it follows a rich history of bookstores on the site. Books have been sold here since 1917!
Novella is a small store but it has all the new releases and most popular books around. It is divided up like any larger store with sections including fiction, biography, travel, crime, young adult, classics and more. But if you can't find the book you're after, the staff are more than happy to order it for you. After all, Novella is a member of Leading Edge Books, a network of over 200 independent bookstores in Australia that are committed to high quality service.
One thing that sets Novella apart from the big-name stores is that littered among each section are recent books by Australian authors that it would be hard to find elsewhere. Like many independent bookshops, Novella seeks to support the local industry. In fact, most times I visit the store, I'm looking for an Australian novel because I know Novella will be the place I'm most likely to find it.
Like its name suggests, Novella Fine Books, Cards and Gifts isn't just about the books either. You can also find mugs, handbags, jewellery, soaps, clocks and more here. And of course there is the selection of cards. Fine is the perfect description of these products. They are quality, tasteful items and the store is set up so that they greet you as you walk in. Don't forget to check the back wall though. Here you'll find candles, incense and more.
One of the best things about this store is the atmosphere. Lately I've noticed there's been rustic wooden ladders propped against some bookshelves with their rungs stacked with books. It's elements like these that make the store seem more intimate somehow; like the shop is overwhelmed with objects that staff want you to have opportunity to buy, though in no way does the space seem cluttered.
Novella is an exquisite store that is more than just a simple book shop. The staff and friendly and know their products. The atmosphere is great. The books are varied and interesting. This is a bookstore that you will keep returning to.
