It is not every day that you go to an art gallery and are greeted by a group of robots. They look a bit like people, they certainly move and talk to you like people but they float around like a Hitchcock's Mrs Danvers or a group of daleks.

Welcome to the robotics of artist Wade Marynowsky, on at the NGV Studio from 22 August - 19 October between 10am - 5pm daily.

The free and interactive exhibit is certainly one of the most extraordinary exhibitions to come to the NGV Australia in quite some time.

Dr Marynowsky works across various disciplines including robotics, performance, music and video.

He is a technological whizz with humour to boot. "Whether you call it a Dalek in drag or a diva with mechanical manners, the Bourgeois Robot 2 is one self-obsessed unit" says Marynowsky.

"People expect robots to interact with them, but I have found that robots don't care for others, they just care for themselves," he says.

Marynowsky's work has been shown at such events as Hobart's MONA FOMA and the International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Poznan, Poland.


"The potential for creative use of robots is unexplored," he said. "My job is to unleash their potential."

And we can enjoy what has been unleashed in this most unusual and striking exhibition.
