If you watch SBS on television, you will know that there is a handful of programs that are made in Norway. The ones I have watched are always excellent and this will have interesting films for the whole family.

It will be held from Saturday 3rd November to Saturday 24th November, 2018, so there is heaps of time to see several of these great movies! They are supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and will be held at the WA Maritime Museum, Victoria Quay Road, Fremantle.

This festival is a season of Norwegian films as well as an exhibition, Amundsen: Lessons from the Arctic. This will be fun for the whole family with adventure stories, documentaries, short films, and more!

Cost for this is free, however, WA Maritime Museum adult entry fees do apply. Bookings are essential and you can make them by phoning 1300 134 081, or checking each movie listed below.

  • Saturday 3rd November
  • 10.00 am - [i]Ploddy The Police Car on the Case[/i] - 72 minutes
    This is a feel-good animated movie which will be fun for the whole family.

    Ploddy the Police Car gets the job of guarding the biggest attraction in the brand new Eagle Park in Bodo. This is an endangered eagle mother and her egg.

    However two female robbers steal the eagle mother, and Ploddy's policeman, Richard, then falls in love with one of the thieves, and things begin to get rather crazy!

    This movie is in English and is suitable for all ages. This film is on twice and you can make your bookings either here or for the later date (24th) here.

    Ploddy was the winner of the 2013 Norwegian Amanda film award for Best Children's Film.



    12.30 pm - [i]Roald Amundsen's South Pole Expedition[/i] - 92 minutes
    Roald Amundsen and his four expedition companions were the first people to reach the South Pole in December 1911.

    Amundsen's group had taken cameras along in order to get a visual record of the journey, and the Antarctic environment.

    This is especially precious as this was at a time when moving cameras had just been invented. A version of this record of the moments of Amundsen's legendary expedition was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2005.

    2.00 pm - [i]Kon-Tiki[/i] - 120 minutes
    This is ann epic adventure film which is based on a true story.

    Thor Heyerdahl is a young adventurer who in 1947 embarked on an amazing expedition.

    His aim was to demonstrate his theory that the South Sea Islands were settled by ancient South American voyagers from thousands of miles to the east. He had a fear of water, was not able to swim, and yet he decided to prove his theory by sailing this voyage himself on the raft, Kon-Tiki.

    This is his story, and this film is the winner of four 2013 Norwegian Amanda film awards, and a 2012 Norwegian International Film Festival Audience Award.

    It has English subtitles and is recommended for mature audiences, as it has mature themes and violence.

  • Saturday 10th November
  • 10.00 am - [i]Operation Arctic[/i] - 87 minutes
    This movie is an adventure story for the young at heart! It is set in the wild Arctic oceans where there are bad winter storms, and the sun will soon disappear.

    A dreadful mistake sees 13-year-old Julia and her twin 8-year-old siblings, stranded on the deserted Half Moon Island. This story is about how they managed in this ruthless terrain and how they had to face challenges as a team.

    It has English subtitles, and is recommended for ages 9 and above.

    It was the winner of the 2015 Norwegian Amanda film award for Best Children's or Youth Film.



    12.30 pm - [i]Roald Amundsen's South Pole Expedition[/i] - 92 minutes

    2.00 pm - [i]The Kautokeino-Rebellion[/i] - 96 minutes
    This is set in northern Norway in 1852 and it tells of one of the most dramatic episodes in northern Scandinavian history.

    It tells the story of the population living there and a wealthy and ruthless liquor dealer, who causes havoc in the town.

    This has English subtitles, and parental guidance is recommended.

  • Saturday 17th November
  • 10.00 am - [i]Norwegian shorts[/i] - 1 hour
    These shorts are for families of all ages and they featuring aliens, cartoon punk rockers, polar bears, golden eagles, magical beings and more.

    12.30 pm - [i] Roald Amundsen's South Pole Expedition[/i] - 92 minutes

    2.00 pm - [i]Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' Expedition 1[/i] - 63 minutes
    - [i]Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' Expedition 2[/i] - 76 minutes
    These are two Arctic documentaries about the 8-year long expedition of Amundsen, on the polar exploration ship, the Maud.

    The expedition had intended to cross the Arctic Ocean and perhaps reach the North Pole. This was difficult with the severe conditions and pack ice, and Amundsen and his team attempted several innovative ways of this crossing, including experimenting with early polar flight.

    These documentaries give you an idea of what daily life was like in all aspects.
