Celebrating its 30th year, the Norton Street Italian Festa is a tribute to all things Italian. It is also one of the biggest community street festivals in Australia.

Festa brings together the local community to celebrate Italian culture and spirit that is the foundation of Leichhardt's local community.

History of Leichardt

The traditional landowners of Leichhardt are the Cadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation who inhabited the region for around 10,000 years before colonisation.

In the 1840's Leichardt was owned by Walter Beames as part of an Estate. Beames subdivided the land in 1849 and the area became known as Leichhardt town, so named after Leichhardt his friend and explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who explored the Hunter and Swan river regions.

Italian settlement of Leichhardt began in 1917, due to political upheaval and poor economic conditions in Europe during the 20th century, many Italian Nationals came to Australia to settle and build a better life. The area soon became known as 'Little Italy'.

After the ravages of World War II, Italian migration increased. Leichardt's population grew as migrants found they could pick up work, affordable housing and a touch of home in the suburb.

Leichardt still remains largely influenced by Italian culture today. The cafes and restaurants as you walk along Norton Street still seduce you with the scent of freshly ground coffee, garlic and meat cooking. The cafe windows are filled with gelato and cream-filled cannoli that tantalise your taste buds and transport you to the very heart of La Dolce Vita.
