I arrived in Brisbane a few months ago and after years of fighting off the 'Heathrow Injection' in London (ie. too many pies and pints at the pub), daily pork buns breaks in China and about the right amount/(way too many) pina coladas in Thailand, it was time to get fit.
It was true, I was in desperate need of exercise and that's when Northside Fitness came into my life.
Now any kind of movement might seem a little bit crazy in the middle of this Brisbane summer but the founder, Nick, and his fitness team, Kim and Chris, keep us coming back for more.
Northside Fitness run a whole range of classes - indoor/outdoor, morning/night, cardio/weights - so you can mix it up or do a bit of everything. I really like the variety and I change it around each week so I'm never, ever bored.
There's a really nice team spirit too and even though there's a wide variety of fitness levels within the group, everyone gets into it 100%. When the going gets tough, and it does, the group motivate each other to push through. And there's always a bit of competition to make you do those extra few push ups or run just that bit faster on that last loop around the park.
Nick takes a holistic approach to his training, giving advice on healthy eating and lifestyle. He is always willing to stay behind and chat about ways you can complement your training. Introducing more wholegrains, having less processed foods and eating a bigger breakfast really helped me get the most out of my sessions.
The classes are in North-west Brisbane, around Ferny Hills and Arana Hills, but are so good that people come from miles away just to attend (yes, even for the 6am classes).
