The Pilbara is Emu Export-mad, there's no doubt about it, but a new brewery that opened just before COVID-19 came to our shores is proving even the most parochial bush chook towns can appreciate a good craft beer.
North West Brewing Co has been open for a few years now and has fast become the talk of the town thanks to its consistent, high-quality pub food, refreshing range of beers and casual, family-friendly atmosphere.
Beer
Let's be real, the reason you go to a brewery is for the beer, and this venue is no slouch. Just the fourth brewery to open up in northern WA, it has quickly become one of the best in the state for pushing the boundaries of what I would consider broad-appeal beers.
The Fully Nectared IPA, my favourite, for example, brings a refreshing tart twist to the craft enthusiast's mainstay, making it a brilliant bridge for those looking to dabble in fancy brews, and a perfect drop for the hot Pilbara climate.
Neap Tide is among a small but growing number of beers proving you can pack flavour into mid-strengths, while the Island Hopper IPA packs a good bitter punch while remaining drinkable on a 40 degree day.
As the brewery matures a few more experimental specials are making their way through the tanks to push the beer boundaries in the bush chook-loving town. For the non-beer drinkers there is a good selection of quality West Australian ciders, wines and spirits from the likes of Funk Cider, The Hoochery and Hayshed Hill.
Food
In a town where food consistency is a hard thing to come by, North West Brewing Co's kitchen has been rock solid. While living in Karratha, and in my recent travels, I have found at most eateries you never know if you are going to get knockout dishes or something decidedly more average on any given day, likely due to the highly cyclical nature of staff in town.
This is not the case at North West Brewing Co. I really do mean it when I say every meal I have had there has been fantastic.
The coffee and whiskey-infused steak sanga needs no introduction - it was in 2022 awarded regional WA's best steak sandwich and for good reason. I've come back for this steak sanga all year and it has been a model of quality and consistency, more than I can say about some previous winners who bring the razzle-dazzle for the comp then serve up peanuts once it's over.
If you are looking for something a little lighter the prawn po-boy was a real winner on my last trip. Fresh, cool prawns with a slight tartness to the sauce and a beautifully crunchy salad. Burgers and pizzas are all brilliant, and the list of wings will each have you licking your fingers - my personal favourite is the smoky BBQ.
Venue
At first glance, you might think a brewery out of town in an industrial area probably isn't a good idea. I sure did. But head out to the venue and you will be pleasantly surprised.
The venue is open, airy, green and does not feel at all like you are surrounded by mining services companies.
Tropical trees, light wooden furnishings and high roofing give the place a spacious feel inside and out. It is a great spot for families too. Outside a cubby house and small play area will keep the youngest kids busy, while inside, arcade games will get the older kids off your back so you can sit back with a drink in peace.
The brewery has become a regular haunt for local and travelling musos too - most weeks you will find laid-back live tunes setting the scene as the sun falls behind the Karratha hills.
