Attention to all who live or who know someone or a group living in the North Sydney Council area, someone from charity volunteers to dedicated staff to enterprising youngsters. If you know someone who deserves to be recognised, nominate them for a Community Award by the 20th of October 2017 deadline.

Every Australia Day, North Sydney Council recognises individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the local community.

Entries are now open for the 2018 Australia Day Community Awards and Council is keen to hear your stories about people who are making a real difference to North Sydney.

There are three categories;

2018 Citizen of the Year.

2018 Young Citizen of the Year.

2018 Community Group Award.

The Community Awards presentation will take place after the Citizenship Ceremony on the 26th January 2018.

For 2017 the winners were;

2017 Citizen of the Year - Bryce Gunn.

.

Volunteer president of registered charity Greenway Tenants Group, Bryce Gunn has been recognized for his services to the Greenway community - the largest public housing estate in North Sydney. In collaboration with other volunteers, Bryce has helped to introduce several new community-led initiatives that resulted in the Group winning the Australasian Housing Institute Tenant-Led Initiative Award in 2015.

Bryce and his fellow volunteers have instigated the refurbishment of the Greenway community centre, secured twice weekly deliveries of OzHarvest food bags for residents, created a central community garden, purchased a 12-seater bus to provide easily-accessible transport for residents, and founded a Wellbeing Centre providing legal, medical and welfare services.
He has also helped secure charity status for the Greenway Tenants Group in 2014, successfully applied for government grants and corporate sponsorship to fund major projects, organised regular BBQs at Bunnings in Artarmon to raise funds for the Greenway community and set up weekly meals at the local Salvation Army.

2017 Young Citizen of the Year - Alice Zhang.

Founded the Learning Project - a charity which provides free tutoring for high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds and "at risk" young people in the Lower North Shore area.

Twenty-year-old Alice has also been involved with a number of local youth services in the North Sydney LGA, including Taldamunde and Planet X.

2017 Community Group Award - Community Connect Transport Services.

Provided a safe, reliable and flexible "point-to-point" transport service for the elderly, people with disabilities and carers on the Lower North Shore area who are unable to attend their necessary appointments through mainstream transport services.
