Sitting just beyond Brisbane's coastline is North Stradbroke Island, a natural beauty filled with an extensive National Park, diverse wildlife and rich indigenous culture. Known as Minjerribah to the island's traditional owners, the Quandamooka people, Straddie is a place to breathe, slow down and connect to the land and its beauty. The island is just a 25-minute boat ride from the coastal town of Cleveland, or 45 if you're taking the vehicle ferry. The boat trip costs just $20 per person, and the vehicle ferry starts from $80.

The island is home to a wide range of wildlife, both on land and water. Humpback Whales flock to Morton Bay from July to October. Point Lookout is a great place to spot these elegant creatures, the Gorge Walk providing incredible views of the turquoise bay. Dolphins also surround the island, often flocking to the surf beaches which surround Straddie such as Frenchman's and Cylinder Beach, making it an ideal place for both beginner and experienced surfers. It is common for surfers to be greeted by a pod of dolphins or even share the bay with a nearby whale. For non-surfers, the island boasts many incredible views of the beautiful blue ocean and stunning bushland, as well as charming swimming spots, bushwalking, cycling tracks and fishing trips.

Accommodation on Straddie ranges from coastal campsites to luxury homes and resorts. Minjerribah camping boasts 8 beautiful beachfront campgrounds scattered across the island. These include powered and unpowered campsites, as well as 20 cabins and 50 glamping tents. All but two campsites are accessible via paved roads, however, if you're seeking a more remote adventure, campsites at Flinders Beach and Main Beach are a little more off the beaten track and only accessible via 4WD. To book visit minjerribahcamping.com.au

A variety of restaurants and cafes welcome visitors to Straddie, offering fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas and homemade Italian Gelati. A highlight is Sunshine Street Food, a Mexican inspired food truck serving a changing menu of healthy and tasty food using local seafood and fresh produce. Sunshine Street Food offers lunch and dinner, and the menu ranges from crispy mackerel fish tacos, to pulled pork and black bean enchiladas. Keep an eye on their Instagram page for their current location @sunshinestreetfood.
