Every suburban shopping strip used to have one, sometimes two, fruit and vegetable shops that is.

Greengrocers, as we called them, are almost a rarity these days as the supermarkets almost have a monopoly on fresh fruit and vegetables.

The is in a busy arcade behind the main shops in Warrandyte Road, North Ringwood, on the corner of Oban Road.

A full range of fruit and vegetables is always available and every item looks extremely fresh, and it is.

Owner, Simon, explains, "I visit the wholesale fruit and vegetable market four times a week, getting up at 1.30 am."

Between customers, Simon was good for a friendly chat. I come from a market garden background and we had a very interesting conversation comparing our vegetable experiences, decades apart.

In many cases, the vegetables you buy today may have been harvested the day before. That's what I would call farm-gate freshness.

It is a very bright and open shop with all produce laid out within easy reach as it is self-service shopping, with all prices prominently displayed.

A small range of cut flowers brightens up the front of the shop and almost competes with the brightness of the fruit and veggies.

Part-time sales assistant Max was happy to pose for a couple of photos as he obviously enjoys his work.

There is a supermarket in the same arcade but there is always a steady flow of customers in this fruit market seeking truly fresh fruit and vegetables.
