It's an expense that no one wants just before Christmas, but if you have kids it's inevitable. For those with children in secondary school, the dreaded booklist invariably means hundreds of dollars flying faster out the door than a hyperactive kid on an Easter egg hunt.

But I have discovered a way to save hundreds of dollars, potentially saving at least 1/3 to 1/2 off your textbook expenses. So don't throw out the old textbooks yet because at North of the Yarra School Booksellers they will purchase good quality second-hand textbooks and give you about one third of what you paid and you can purchase others for a reduced rate.

You might want to alert your children to the fact that you can make some money back on those expensive textbooks so that they don't lose them, leave them in their lockers or give them away to their mates… or fill in the gap with any other excuse given to you by your teenager.

So here's all you have to do to save some money on textbooks. Take all of your old textbooks to North of the Yarra School Booksellers and they will check that other schools are in need of them. If they are, they will check the quality and then hand you cash. They start accepting books once Year 12 has finished.

I like the fact that they are not judgemental when they inspect my pristine condition books. This clearly indicates that my son is not overzealous when it comes to academic effort. I was happy that I recovered $35 for two books that I had previously purchased at the North of the Yarra.

Don't be upset though if they don't need your books because they only purchase books that may be purchased by other buyers because they are on booklists for the following year. That means that if the curriculum changes or schools decide to change their book selection that you/they may not have a buyer.

Once you have your cash you can go next door to another section of their business and purchase second-hand books that other parents have cashed in.

Second-hand books are sold at about two thirds of the cost of a new book. They also stock new books and a full range of stationery on booklists. That means this is the one stop shop for all your textbooks and stationery needs. You need to weigh up the convenience with the possibility of claiming stationery expenses on tax benefits.

If they don't have the books that you need you can leave the list and collect the completed order another time. You will be notified by post when they arrive.

If they don't have the second-hand books you require you can return as many times as you like just in case someone has cashed them in at a later date. For one or two books you can ring prior and the sales assistants will check the shelves for the books that you need.

One hint: they are pretty busy in December so I usually take my books in early in case they get too many copies and don't need my book/s. If they are flooded with second hand books they might ask you to come in at another time, as they don't want to be stuck with too many copies of the same book. Fair enough.

The workers tell me that it's better to go early in the day because it can get very busy, particularly on Saturday. Thankfully they have many sales assistants but it can take a long time for them to check the shelves for your books particularly if you have a long list/s.

The North of the Yarra School Booksellers is open all yearlong and are their busiest between December and March.

I figure that if you are able to cash in some of your second-hand books and you save on second-hand purchases, on the bill of about $600 you could save about $2-$300 on new purchases. That's money in your pocket and not in the booksellers.
