‘Waltzing Matilda’ heritage in Winton

'Waltzing Matilda' is a song that immediately comes to mind when you visit Winton in Central West Queensland. As Australia's unofficial national anthem penned by Australian poet Banjo Paterson, the song conjures up the essence of the Australian outback. There is no better place to hear the tune than in Winton and at The North Gregory Hotel.

Located in the heart of Winton the 'Grand Old Lady' is where 'Waltzing Matilda' was first performed. A piano in the hotel's foyer plays homage to the legend and, if you are lucky, you may hear the famous tune being played.

The 'Gregory' as it is fondly known, is a classic Aussie pub with a great bar for that 'coldie' after a day out travelling or just sightseeing at one of the many attractions around Winton. The hotel's frontage and foyer is decked in a wonderful art deco style to reflect the grandeur of its heritage, and survival after fires, drought and hardship.

The hotel has played an important part in the formation of what is now a global brand, QANTAS. Some 100 years ago it was the meeting place for Winton locals who met, often in secret, to form the fledgeling airline.

The Combo Waterhole or billabong is said to be the inspiration of the song penned by Banjo Paterson in January 1895. The Waterhole is just 132km northwest of Winton off the Landsborough Highway and is a short walk through fields and across a stream and unique flagstone overshots made by Chinese settlers.
