50 guns (big and small), fortified tunnels, paintings, medals, maps, photographs and 4,000 books! , the National Artillery Museum is a fantastic place to visit even if you have never had any interest in Australian military history before.

Located at North Head, this distinctive museum is much more exciting than first imagined. Guided tours are run by volunteers who share intriguing and sometimes personal stories related to the vast collection of artillery and memorabilia.

There is a unique Memorial Walk Walk commemorating over 3,000 men and women who have served for Australia since colonial times. Even more enthralling is the historical tunnel that runs beneath, only accessed during a guided tour. A bit scary though if you suffer from claustrophobia! However the food at the café is delicious.

‘ is much more than a military museum. There are shaded picnic areas with adjoining BBQs, a spectacular Harbour Lookout Area (the Observation Platform) , historic World War Two fortifications and tunnels listed in the Australian Heritage Register , and Café that has extraordinary views of the entrance to Sydney Harbour and the CBD’.

The usual opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm. Regular tours cost $11 (adults) $8 (concession) $5 (children) and $25 (family). Group tours can be arranged.

It’s a short drive from Manly or catch the 135 bus from Manly Wharf.
