Fans of Alfred Hitchcock's classic films will be able to recite them all and more. The Birds. Dial M for Murder. Strangers on a Train. Vertigo. Psycho. Lesser known, but much beloved, is the thriller North by Northwest, which has been adapted for the stage and is coming to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre's Lyric Theatre for a strictly limited two-week season.

North by Northwest, the play, remains faithful to the film's original plot. An advertising executive, in a case of mistaken identity, is chased cross-country by a group of foreign spies who will stop at nothing to capture him. Even the famous scene from the 1959 film, in which the star Cary Grant is attacked by a crop-dusting plane, finds expression in this stage adaptation by Carolyn Burns, directed by Simon Phillips.

As such, North by Northwest offers slick, stylish, and not-so-serious thrills - a perfect way to escape mounting pre-Christmas pressures. When performed in Canada last year, a Toronto Now reviewer described it as "ingenious ... a recreation of the stylish thriller, but with filmic devices that add to the live fun".

The Brisbane cast includes Australian actors Matt Day in the leading role of Roger Thornhill, the man on the run, and Amber McMahon as mysterious blonde Eve Kendall. Both actors starred in the Melbourne Theatre Company's production in 2015/16. Queensland cast members include Christen O'Leary (Maggie and various roles) and Leon Cain (Janitor and various other roles).
