The Norman Hotel markets itself tongue in cheek as 'Brisbane' worst vegetarian restaurant' because it specialises in different cuts of steak cooked on a barbecue grill. The iconic building stands on the corner of Ipswich Road in Woollongabba and includes a large beer garden and outdoor dining area.

The building was built in 1889 as a grand hotel by Mr Robert Heaslop and was named after Sir Henry Norman, the Governor of Queensland at the time.

The menu is extensive and there are some gluten free options and dare I admit it, some vegetarian options. Some of the meat is sourced from Queensland family owned brand Diamantina beef and you can order Wagyu and Angus or grass fed cuts.

I enjoyed my James Squire beer battered fish with plenty of coleslaw and a baked potato (I swapped it for the chips). My dining companions remarked that their salt and pepper calamari and chicken parmigiana were both delicious respectively.

My husband ordered the N.Y. cut striploin grass-fed steak from King Island, Tasmania and it was cooked perfectly, although it was a little grizzly. All of the meals were generous portions but please expect to pay top dollar for the quantity.

The Norman Hotel must be doing something right to remain in business for 126 years as one of Brisbane's iconic pub and steakhouse.
