Realising how I normally relish a good burger , fellow writer Dave Walsh of Weekendnotes made it known to me that a burger bar by the name of had opened up in Norwood. Could it be pure coincidence they had picked the 4th of July, American Independence Day, to commence business. With over 1600 likes on their Facebook page since opening three days ago, news of this spot have gone viral.

Though Nordburger's website stated that it did not open on a Sunday at the time, I decided to drive past to check out its frontage since I was in the vicinity of Norwood. Nothing could have been better when the Parade's pedestrian crossing signalled red and I had to stop the car. Then I saw it! Just glancing from inside the car, Nordburger's light coloured wood and glass frontage looked a very modern burger joint. Detecting soft amber rays coming through its glass windows and movement of people within, I thought to myself that today might just be my lucky day.

Parking was no hassle and in less than a minute I was at Nordburger. Peering through their glass window there were no customers in sight but staff were busy preparing for opening. Darting inside quickly I grabbed a menu on top of their concrete slab bench, took a couple of photos and checked what time I should return back for lunch.

Returning at a quarter past noon, I found literally packed to the brim with customers. We perched ourselves on the stools at the entrance since there was no way that we could make our way through with a pram. Despite five gourmet hot dogs on the menu, most customers had opted for one of the five burgers on the board.

The only place available for us to sit down (with a pram) was at the front of house, an area intended for takeaways. It did not take long for our Mushroomburger, Bacon-double burger, salted caramel shake and fries to arrive. In fact I was surprised at the speed at which orders were being fulfilled given the number of customers eating in and taking out. Seeing the staff working in the open kitchen it was obvious that they were well organised and well delegated ensuring a constant flow of food to its patrons.

Steering away from the classic shakes of chocolate, strawberry or vanilla, I opted for the salted caramel shake. This was a hit with the kids though they would have probably been equally happy with a pretzel, cornflake or a peanut butter & jelly shake.

The Mushroomburger with its panko crumbed portobello delivered a light crunch and its tasty filling of coleslaw, mustard, ketchup and Nord sauce complemented it well. If there was any vegetarian food I had to recommend to carnivorous friends, this burger would be one of them. I rate it five stars.

Much to my embarrassment and probably theirs as well, a bunch of curious passerbys pressed their faces against the window for a look-in just when I was trying to take a bite out of the Bacon-double burger. Who was more shocked? Bear in mind that it takes some skill to eat these high stacking burgers without the seepage of sauce over yourself and yet getting a bite of everything at once. I must have been quite a pretty picture, no less.

Apart from regular crinkle cut fries, Tater Tots were also available. These deep fried balls of grated potatoes resembled hash browns in texture and this was the first time I had them. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, they were delicious. However they were rather heavy handed with the salt with rosemary so perhaps next time I will remember to either omit it or request for less. For a bit of spicy kick, a chipotle seasoning is also available on the crinkle cut fries.

Though the burgers at are smaller in size compared to other burgers from similar establishments , their prices are lower and therefore considerably cheaper.

The moment we vacated the premises our stools were eagerly taken up by others. I learned later that all their burgers were sold out just two hours after we had left. No wonder, these burgers were cooked by Michael Weldon from MasterChef Australia Season 3.
