The world renowned Noosa Triathlon kicks off in just under five weeks' time and triathletes the world over (along with their families and support crews), are counting down the days to one of the sport's biggest events of the season.

The main event is to be held on Sunday 30th October and sees competitors start off with a Digital Assets/docs/ntmsf/NTMSF_Triathlon_Map_2011.pdf 1.5km swim, followed by a 40km cycle and finished off with a 10km run . The transition area is located in Lions Park, only a short stroll from the heart of Noosa's social hub, Hastings Street. Competitors swim through the Noosa River, ride out towards Cooroy and back, and run a loop of Weyba Road.

This is an Olympic distance triathlon and it is loved by triathletes and their supporters the world over for its picturesque location and the amazing vibe that fills the entire town of Noosa throughout the whole 5-day festival.

The hotels that line the racecourse are filled with cheering spectators, and decorated with inspirational banners. From early on the morning of the main event, the transition area is buzzing – competitors are all decked out in their race gear and doing final preparations to their transition set-up, dance tracks are pumping over the airwaves and supporters are soaking up the atmosphere while they find themselves the best position to cheer on their triathlete.

Competitors can either take part in team of 3, completing one leg each, or they can do the full 3 legs of the event themselves. Either way, the feeling when they cross the finish line is incredibly emotional – I haven't done the event myself, but I supported my husband as he completed his first Noosa Tri last year, and I know how proud and elated I felt to watch him cross the finish line.

Around town, as the finishers start flowing in, the celebrations ramp up and the restaurants and cafes start brimming with toned, tanned and tired bodies. The day's event is often the result of months of training and sacrifice and by that Sunday afternoon, Noosa is truly in party mode.

Like us, many competitors and their families and friends choose to make a long weekend of this "multi sport festival", and book a unit from the Friday to the Monday. It gives the competitor plenty of time to get their bike racked and spend some time relaxing before the event, or support friends who may be participating in one of the many lead-up events, such as The Noosa Journal Breakfast Fun Run, or the Eyeline Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim.

Noosa is a town that knows how to put on a great party, and without doubt The Noosa Triathlon festival is one of its best. Go, check out the Multi Sports Festival, but don't forget to hit the beach too!
