Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner. It's the time for friends and family to gather admiring the moon, solving riddles, sipping tea and feasting on mooncakes.
Traditionally, the moon-shaped pastries are filled with sweet lotus seed paste and have harder and thicker skins. Over the years, these customary Mid-Autumn festival treats have evolved to reach new heights of luxury, gastronomy, and decadence. Now the trendy and contemporary versions are on the rise with many varieties featuring ice cream, foie gras, cheese and durian.
Calling all non-fans of the traditional yolk-centred goodies, here are five unique flavours that are worth the calories:
Salted Yolk and Chicken Floss Mooncake
Salted egg craze isn't over! Award-Winning Chef Pang Kok Keong from Antoinette who has a penchant for experimenting with flavors, he has once again weaved his culinary magic by combining two distinctive ingredients that most locals love – salted egg yolk and chicken floss - resulting in Singapore's first-ever Salted Yolk Chicken Floss Mooncake! It comes with the creamy taste of low-sugar white lotus paste and pumpkin seeds. Currently, it is marketed at $58.

Cat & The Fiddle, a specialist in cheesecakes established by the award-winning chef Daniel Tay who had also founded Bakerzin, has joined the mooncake craze for the first time. They have 2 types which are aptly named The King of the Moon - an 8-piece Mao Shan Wang durian and cream cheese mooncake in a white chocolate shell - and The Cow Jumped Over the Mooncake - an 8-pieces snow skin assorted flavors of cookies and cream, blueberry, alcohol-laced strawberry and chocolate. Both sets are priced at $68.80 a box.
