When Frances McDormand stars in a movie, it just begs to be seen, and I am glad I watched this. It exceeded my expectations from her and the film itself.

This is a poignant story of a person suddenly left alone to make their way in the world. She chooses 'nomadism', as the title suggests, and it turns into a journey of self-discovery, chance encounters with people along the way, some of whom stay for a while, while others are there just for a brief moment.

I had not heard of the director, Chloe Zhao, but was very impressed and looked her up when I got home, only to find she had directed other films, one of which is The Rider in 2017, which I watched right after. She is also the screenplay writer for Nomadland, which is based on a book of the same title.

It has been applauded by critics all around and is well-deserving of it. I think McDormand and Zhao both deserve an Oscar nod.

Tugs at the heartstrings.
