Nocturnal Animals would be rated as a nine if I gave my film reviews a score out of ten. The genre wasn't something that I'd normally be attracted to but this film excels in the storyline, set design and shot composition.

There's something compelling about Tom Ford's work. He's better known for his fashion design, but he wrote, co-produced and directed this film based on the 1993 novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright.

An art gallery owner, Susan (Amy Adams), receives a copy of her ex-husband's (Jake Gyllenhaal) unpublished novel. As she reads the book, she is transported back in time and wonders if there is a hidden meaning behind the violent thriller.

The opening sequences are actually performance art, as part of an installation curated by Susan. Ford received some criticism for his first film, A Single Man, as being unrealistic in its depiction of the characters who all looked like catwalk models. Although, I must point out that the baddies are incredibly gorgeous young men (excluding their behaviour).

The novel delves into a family holiday car trip which turns horribly wrong when the car is forced off the road by a gang of rednecks.

Nocturnal Animals is a fantastic psychological thriller which pulls off the story's three parallel strands into an almost perfect whole.

Nocturnal Animals releases in cinemas around Australia on Thursday 10th November 2016.
