Where can you observe penguins on Phillip Island without paying a cent or enduring a long wait for them to come in from the sea?

Go to The Nobbies on the west end of Phillip Island and have a thorough search under the boardwalk. There is a good chance that you will spot a Little Penguin or two. In the early summer you can see nesting Silver Gulls and their chicks.

Even if you don't find any penguins, the short walk to the blowhole has spectacular views of the coast.

It can be rather blustery and cold if the weather isn't playing nice. In fact, men wearing hair-pieces with suspect adherence should avoid the boardwalk full stop. However, if the weather is bad then the view of the blowhole can be even more spectacular.

Seal Rocks are about one and a half kilometres offshore from The Nobbies and are home to Australia's largest Australian Fur Seal colony. Cameras have been set-up so that you can observe the seals from the comfort and warmth of the Visitor Centre. For about $5 you get four minutes viewing the seals and the opportunity to take three photos which can be purchased from the Gift Shop.

There are organized boat trips to the Seal Colony including Wildlife Coast Cruises who offer a two hour cruise for around $70 for adults and $48 for children.

The Visitor Centre displays are informative with interactive displays and there is an Indoor Games area for the kids. The Cafe which serves meals and snacks has a lot of seating available but the food is priced rather high - obviously the transport costs from Cowes along Ventnor Road to The Nobbies must be horrendous! There is also an obligatory souvenir section where the kids can plead for a cute stuffed penguin.

The area closes quite early (between 4pm and 8pm depending on the season) in order to protect the native wildlife.
