A 'Wedding with God' - this was the title given to his very last performance by Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the greatest ballet dancers and choreographers of his era.
The performance took place in Switzerland on January 19, 1919 and marked the end of a brilliant but controversial career, one which changed the world of ballet forever.
The ballet 'Nijinsky' was created by one of the world's foremost modern choreographer and Director of the Hamburg Ballet, John Neumeier and brilliantly portrays the descent into madness of a genius of dance and design.
The glamour of the costumes and the stunning sets provide an insight into a time when the Ballets Russes was seen as the pinnacle of ballet, while the thoughts and memories of Nijinsky himself crowd the stage with images.
It is a rare privilege for The Australian Ballet to perform this ballet, as they are only the second company in the world to be granted permission to do so by the choreographer himself.
It provides a fantastic vehicle for male dancers and with the strong cadre within this company, The Australian Ballet does it proud, with some powerful and spectacular performances.
Nijinsky is at the Festival Theatre, from October 14 to 18. Tickets available at
