Award winning director Fred Petersen returns with another thrilling plot in Garrick Theatre's production
Night Was Our Friend.
Well known for his comedy productions and intricate sets, Petersen is embarking on a dramatic production this time round. He found a copy of
Night Was Our Friend in a carton of scripts at the theatre and upon reading the opening scenario, his interest was caught right away. He knew this play could really go somewhere!
Petersen says, "I chose this play because of the mix of emotions and well knitted plot, which enables the actors to become meaningful with each other. The play starts in the present, then goes back in time to come forward again".
Petersen has enjoyed directing and acting for as long as he can remember. His roots are in musical theatre, however since joining the Garrick in 1976, he has relished drama and comedy, with the latter being his favourite genre.
"Now and again I like to challenge myself with drama. This experience has been absolutely brilliant, because each actor is rapt in the play and therefore directing them is a joy".
Having won numerous awards throughout the years, including Best Director for
Caught in the Net and Best Use of Stage and Innovative Special Prop by the Independent Theatre Association, no doubt this show will be another success for Petersen.
Joy Norton returns to the stage after a short hiatus. Norton plays the conflicted yet loyal Sally Raynor, whose husband is presumed dead after he went missing in the jungles of South America. After two years he returns and Sally has moved on with her life and has a new love.
She is confronted with his strange behavior, which is compounded with his affinity with the darkness of the night. As she tries to come to terms with her tormented husband and feels obliged to put her war-wracked husband out of the way, or at least to put the means of suicide in his way.
Norton says, "I like my character's resilience and the variety of emotions she experiences throughout her times of discovery and growth".
Vince Austin plays the passionate and emotional Dr John Harper, Sally's new love. Austin who was last seen treading Garrick's boards in the 2011 production of
Charley's Aunt, however frequently performs with his light hearted comedy duo
Silver Hair. Austin says, "Being somewhat of a larrikin, this emotionally energetic role is a refreshing challenge. I am enjoying flexing these new emotional muscles".
David Kerr plays Sally's returning husband Martin Raynor. Kerr was recently seen this year in
Light Shining in Buckinghamshire and describes his character as damaged and unpredictable. "The script is great and an under-represented gem. This play has given me a great chance to experiment and has been a challenge, pushing performance skills to a whole new limit. It's been highly enjoyable".
Mundaring resident Drew Dyer who plays the inquisitive and prying character of Cooper, recently performed in
Rookery Nook at the Marloo Theatre. This will be his first time performing at the historic Garrick Theatre.
Dramatic situations and the suspense of the interactions between family and friends and Martin's attempts to face his demons make for a gripping climax.
