The Original Sandwich Deli

It's not unusual for me to go on an arty walkabout, discovering street art everywhere. I love art in all its forms and never miss an opportunity to go to street art festivals, gallery openings, art exhibitions etcetera. During my walkabout with a friend, we happened upon
Nico's Sandwich Deli at 100 Kerr Street, Fitzroy, and across the street, The Fitz Cafe & Rooftop, to give you some sort of bearing. There was a sizeable crowd hanging around, so we figured it must be good, and joined the young and the beautiful. There are general benches out at the front as you can see in the last image, there are a couple of them, but right in front of
Nico's there are little tables and chairs set up in a makeshift enclosure with sun umbrellas to keep the direct sun at bay, and there's street parking.
Pastrami
Open from 8am to 3pm every day at Fitzroy, the full menu is available from 10am. This is one place you don't mind paying $18 a sandwich because it was so worth it. To be honest, I've been back three more times, today (Tue 13 May 2025) being my 3rd time and I've munched my way through the Cubano the first time, the Continental next, and today, the Pastrami I was eyeballing my friend eating but hadn't tried until today. Each and every time, I've not been able to finish a full sandwich and keep bringing back the other half, which is just as enjoyable, a few hours later. Today I thought, I'll force myself to relax and take it easy, and just graze through this gorgeous Pastrami but nope, I failed. It came home with me.
In case you didn't get a load of all that Pastrami
There are a couple of smaller options for around $13 - the Little Chicken, and the Little Spicy Sanga, which is filled with fried chicken, Yuzukosho Mayo, Dill Pickle, and heaps of white pepper on Demi Brioche for one, and the Fire Sauce on Demi Brioche for the Little Spicy Sanga. Then there's the Hot Fries for $9, and its amazing dipping sauce. I didn't go wrong having the Cubano the first time around. It was filled with Braised Gochujang Pork, Deli Ham, Swiss, Mustard, Pickles, Nico's Salad Cream, and Crisp Lettuce. It came toasted.
Continental
The second time around was for the Continental Fresh Sanga - it was filled with Mortadella, Deli Ham, Whipped Nduja, Swiss, Agrodolce, Salsa, and Rocket on Ciabatta. It was beautiful but having had the Cubano before, I found this a little milder, and I guess I just like something a little spicier. The Pastrami did it for me today with its sliced Pastrami, Lunch Sauce, Sauerkraut, Mustard, Pickles, and Cheese. Did I forget to mention, the coffee by Seven Seeds is pretty good too, plus there are cold drinks available. If the sandwich isn't bulky enough, you can add more cheese as extras, along with hot sauces, chilli oil, and such.
Cuban
I'm not particularly keen on the little spicy sangas, and not because I have tried them. I guess my eyes are just bigger than my stomach, and there are still quite a few toasted and fresh, massive sangas to go through. There's the Kimchi Melt, and the Tuna Melt, in the toasted range, and in the fresh range, the Giardiniera, Chicken Schnitzel, Vegan Schnitzel, and Fresh Salad. Check out the
menu here . There are three Nico's to choose from, the CBD, Fitzroy where I went, and Brunswick East. I just hope the ones behind the brand, making the sandwiches over at the other branches are just as good as the ones in Fitzroy. They have such a friendly demeanour too.
Chips with amazing sauce - you can tell just by looking at it
I guess that's not difficult, because it has such a vibe to it, a sense of community, and great ambiance. Today being Tuesday it wasn't so crowded, but if you're planning on checking it out over the weekend, be warned, this obviously popular and well-known local destination gets quite busy.
