SALA Exhibitions are many and varied.

They showcase a host of Southern Australian artists in many eclectic venues.

Nicholas Folland is an artist who has a fascination for old crystal glassware, history, travel and the search for identity. These are all merged into a fascinating exhibition currently on show at the Art Gallery of SA.

Art is about seeking the new and stealing from the past.

When stuck in the everyday routines of cooking, cleaning, rushing and planning and all this can be before breakfast. Life can become a blur of commitments and routines.

An artist risks upsetting the way we look at out lives. By reimagining and reworking what is often overlooked.

Nicholas Folland is currently exhibiting in the SALA Festival .

His previous installation in the Art Gallery of SA involved a carefully constructed collection of old crystal ware suspended from the ceiling.

If felt curiously at home in the historic surrounds of the Art Gallery.
We are now taken to the extreme climate of Nicholas Folland in the current exhibition.

Here is a merging of the beloved crystal ware with stories of the Antarctic, exploration and mapping travels across vast distances.

This exhibition includes pieces from the colonial collection of the Art Gallery of SA. Which is fortunate to have a massive treasure trove of archival and stored historical art works to choose from.

Entering the newly exhibited works the observer steps into this world of crystal objects and sail boats within dimed light. Walled glass pieces give off an eerie light. The illumination seems to draw people to it.

Every day old glass objects that may still be gathering dust at home, or still in the box they came in have been harnessed by this artist. Turning them into ethereal and shining beings.

Nicholas Folland has found a way of bringing ordinary items into an extraordinary realm.

There is also a recently published book that is devoted to Nicholas Folland. This publication coincides with the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. Written by Lisa Slade. Published by Wakefield Press.
