The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne is inviting you to their free event (no bookings required) to celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome in the Year of the Dragon over the weekend of 10-11 February 2024. Celebrate this cultural event over two days with lion and dragon dances, performances of classical and traditional music, guided tours of the Triennial exhibition in Mandarin, English and AUSLAN, art-making activities, food, mahjong games, fashion parades, a dragon bubble party and much more. For your complimentary NGV Lunar New Year red envelopes to gift to family and friends, you'll find them available for collection from the Information Desk at NGV International.


  • Sat 10 Feb 11am at Great Hall - Settle under the stain glassed ceiling for a performance of Chinese and Australian classics by an ensemble from Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra
  • Sat 10 Feb 12pm & Sun 11 Feb 11.45am at Great Hall - Attend a discussion by Melbourne artists Scotty So and YiYi Hanfu to discover how Chinese fashion has changed over time. You're invited to dress up in traditional garments and join the artists for a community fashion parade through the Gallery
  • Sat 10 & Sun 11 Feb various times at Great Hall - A special dragon dance performance of ‘Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate’ by a group of passionate performers from Hong De Lion Dance Association
  • Sat 10 Feb at Great Hall - Lion dancers from Hong De Lion Dance Association pop up in the Gallery for a special surprise Lion Dance especially for Lunar New Year at NGV
  • Sun 11 Feb 2pm at Great Hall - Guzeng musician QiQi will evoke images of tranquil Chinese landscapes when she plays classical and folk melodies on her 21-string Chinese zither in a special performance for Lunar New Year
  • Sat 10 & Sun 11 Feb 10am-4pm at NGV Garden - Bring the family, get together and play some mahjong just for fun all day
  • Sat 10 & Sun 11 Feb 10am-5pm at NGV Garden - Dance to your favourite Lunar New Year tunes under a bubble-filled sky for a festive fusion of music and dragon-inspired fun


  • Sat 10 & Sun 11 Feb 10am-4pm at Level 2 Exhibition Space - The whole family can channel their creativity and celebrate the Year of the Dragon by drawing a dragon feast created by artist Jason Phu especially for this year’s festivities
  • Sat 10 Feb 1pm at Great Hall - Experience the vibrancy of the streets of Korea with a performance of percussion instruments and dance by The Korean Culture Group, Sori. This music style was traditionally called farmers’ music for its strong percussion use and folk style

  • There will also be special tours running over this weekend, starting with the Family Gallery Tour which will run at 10.30am on both days, in both English and Mandarin. You'll be with NGV educators for an interactive event to share your ideas and discover how symbols and images can communicate a story. Hear stories about the Lunar New Year and learn about exciting legends of dragons from cultures around the world.

    The Triennial Highlights Tour will also run over the weekend, and you'll need to meet at the Information Desk for this one to explore the highlights of the Triennial with knowledgeable NGV community ambassadors and view artworks spanning contemporary art, design and architecture. The English tour runs are at 11.30am and 1.30pm, the Mandarin tour at 12.30pm, and the AUSLAN tour is on Sunday 11 Feb only at 11am. The AUSLAN tour sees Deaf artist Phoenix Cheung giving you a tour of Asian Art highlights from NGV Triennial. No English translation provided.

    The Sunday (11 Feb) also brings Chinese Beijing Opera to you at 11am - when renowned opera singers from Mei Lan Fang’s Chinese Beijing Opera Friendship Association & Chinese Beijing Opera Club of Melbourne will grace the stage in a captivating performance. While being entertained and immersed in activities at the NGV, do note you can also indulge in delicious dumplings, noodles and more from the Great Hall and Gallery Kitchen.
