A visit to Newy's Veggie Patch, Kirrup is always a must do on my self catered trips to Balingup. Why carry fruit and veggies from home, which have already been transported and refrigerated before reaching my suburban green grocer's, when I can pick up locally grown, well priced, fresh produce from Newy's?

In fact, I will often plan my trip around Newy's opening hours which is closed from Monday to Wednesday; enabling the fruit and veggies to be freshly harvested and proudly displayed in the shop for Thursday reopening.

It is not just the fresh produce which makes this a pleasant shopping experience. The displays in front of the store of wooden crated apples on rustic stands, and hay bales loaded with prize pumpkins, are a taste of the country character that is found inside the store.

Inside, the produce of the Newy's recent labour is placed in wicker baskets, metal containers and on wooden stands. Blackboard backdrops are chalked with fruit and vegetable names, prices are clear, and even nutritional information is shared along with suggestions for accompaniments to the nutritious supplies.

Some of those accompaniments may be found in the fridges of meat and dairy at the back of the shop. Raw meats, cooked meats, cheeses and yoghurts and drinks abound. Keep your eye out for a bargain on Wednesday afternoon as sell by dates are adhered to and produce needs shifting before Thursday's reopening.

Wooden shelves boast honeys, sauces, pickles, pastas, popcorn, coffee, chocolate and many more of my favourite things.

On Sunday, when I shopped, the eggs, fresh bread and home baked gluten free slices had sold out.

However, it is the handmade and again Kirup made Maclyn Grove olive oil soaps with essential oils which tempt me every time. They are wrapped in handmade paper. Fragrances of frankincense, cinnamon, vanilla, lavender, patchouli, cedar wood, thyme, camomile, and many more, find me before I find them. Before I could take control, a soap of every perfume was in my basket with a promise to myself that this time I will share with friends.
