A suburb full of music, art, mystery and mayhem, Newtown, located in Sydney's inner west, is the bohemian heart of Sydney. Originally home to the Gadigal people, it has evolved from its gritty factory days and hard-edged late 20th-century alternative sub-culture into a foodie lovers paradise full of craft brewers, vintage stores and endless restaurants.

Present-day Newtown is still a vibrant and eclectic community focused on LGBTI diversity and social inclusiveness. However, you are more likely to find a vegan sausage than an emerging rock band. It's 6km exclusion from Sydney's strict lock out laws has continued its notoriety for a rowdy nightlife and the commercial arterial heart of King Street still thrives.

Crowds arrive every weekend to shop at the vintage boutiques, record stores, antique shops, hairdressers, designer homewares, jewellers then eat at the numerous restaurants and cafes.

Every Saturday, at the junction opposite the station the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, celebrates the suburbs up and coming makers when it hosts the Newtown Market. A community event to showcase the suburbs continuing diversity with an array of stalls of collectable music and books, vintage clothes, upcycled wares, handmade jewellery, fresh bread, flowers, homemade sauces and baked treats.

When you visit the Newtown Market, you are not only supporting the local community and local makers, you are also helping to raise much-needed funds for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre who provide vital services for the local community.

The centre provides much needed community support services for disadvantaged groups such as the aged, people with disabilities, the homeless, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds. Vital work as soaring property prices in the area are leaving many long term residents in the community disadvantaged or displaced.

So if you feel like finding something bespoke and unique to add to your wardrobe or you want to grab some seriously delicious baked goods, all while contributing to the local community make sure you visit the Newtown Markets on a Saturday soon.
