is something of a Toowong institution, having been there for years, and I'm not sure why it took me this long to get around to going there. I was glad I finally did and would happily eat there again. Situated on the High Street, opposite Toowong Village shopping centre and Toowong railway station and around the corner from a bus stop, The Newsroom is very easy to get to either by car or public transport. There are both inside and outside tables. There are two steps up to get inside and there is no ramp or hand rail, which might pose a problem for customers with a disability.

The cafe is smallish and was surprisingly crowded for a Sunday morning but we managed to get a table for four. We didn't have to queue for long to order and the food arrived fairly quickly. The staff were very friendly. While the cafe isn't especially set up to be child friendly (for example there did not seem to be any high chairs available), I didn't get the sense that my children were unwelcome either (no death glares from staff when my toddler wanted to hide under the table or the baby had a little whinge).

The Newsroom offers an all day breakfast menu, as all good cafes should. To my delight there were several vegetarian options on it, including mushrooms in garlic and thyme and french toast. I chose the sweet potato hash cakes, which came with a poached egg, asparagus, rocket, avocado and pesto. It was a bit of an unusual breakfast, but really yummy. The tea was good too.

My carnivorous dining companion enjoyed the Spanish Grill, with Turkish bread, proscuitto, olives and haloumi. Having pinched a little from his plate I can confirm that the haloumi was cooked to perfection, just enough to still be squeaky.

The prices were reasonable and the servings were generous. If I go back at a different time of day I will definitely try something from the tempting display in the dessert cabinet. All in all it was a very satisfying dining experience.
