Day One of the New Zealand Cup and Show Week saw the 111th running of the New Zealand Trotting Cup (a misnomer as the event is actually a pacing event) held on the Second Tuesday of November, one week after the equally historic Melbourne Galloping Cup.
Just as Michelle Payne made history by becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, Victorian trainer/driver Kerryn Manning became the first lady driver to drive former Kiwi horse Arden Rooney to victory in the NZ Trotting Cup at Addington Raceway at Christchurch this afternoon.
Another day of glamour, spectacular fashion, food, drink, fun and music as 20,000 racing fans and visitors flocked to Addington Raceway to see the running of the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup this afternoon. A Group One race, it is harness racing's equivalent to the Melbourne Galloping Cup. More displays of wonderful hats by the lovelies as in Melbourne last week.
The Australian success was applauded by the New Zealand harness racing fraternity who are involved in the industry on the other side of the Tasman as well. Arden Rooney was an unsuccessful racehorse who was sold to Australian interests and trained by Kerryn Manning in Victoria who had country racing successes before the horse won Australia's top race, the Hunter Cup.
There is a galloping meeting at Riccarton Park tomorrow, another day of harness racing at Addington on Friday including the NZ Free For All, culminating in the NZ Galloping Cup at Riccarton on Saturday. There are also three days at the A & P Show on the outskirts of Christchurch City and a day's Greyhound Racing at Addington on Thursday. Cup Week in Christchurch is one of the most important weeks on the social calendar as well.
