This production is transmitted live in HD & surround sound into 1900 cinemas around the globe as part of the Met:Live Hd series.

Settle into your seats for this 3 hour 15 minute kicker, while you listen to Werther being sung in French with English subtitles. Make sure you bring a boxed lunch which you can graze on during interval.

The German writer wrote a novel in the form of a collection of letters from Werther to an unseen friend. Werther, tells of his love for Charlotte who is betrothed to another man. This impossible, intense love leads the self absorbed Werther to suicide.

Jonas Kaufmann, sings the title role with a melting voice, that resonates virility and intensity. Sophie Koch who plays Charlotte lends an aching vulnerability to the role with a strong and fabulous voice. She looks glamorous and sounds superb.

The French conductor leads the Met orchestra in a textured and rich performance. The sets and lighting are absolutely mesmerising, placing us in the era its set in.

The final scene draws us into the claustrophobic life from which the poet escapes through suicide its a difficult piece but carried out beautifully.

The superb cast and production deserves the applause and ovations. Bravo!
