Although Memorial Day is observed and celebrated nationally on the last Monday in May, and the traditional date set for Memorial Day is May 30, Memorial Day, the parades (yes, that is plural) start around the middle of May. Below is a list of the various Memorial Day parades, when and where they are held, and the routes taken.
Please be aware that this list may not be all-inclusive; there are parades going on in different areas throughout the entire weekend. If any have been left out, it was truly inadvertent.
PARADES HELD ON SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2011:
* Great Kills Memorial Day Parade
This parade is one of the first ones held before Memorial Day; both it and the 369th Regiment are generally held before Memorial Day weekend. The traditional day for this parade is "two Sundays before Memorial Day." This year that will be May 15.
This parade is held on Staten Island, and starts at Giffords Lane at 11:00 AM. From Giffords Glen the parade route goes to Amboy Road and then to Nelson Avenue. From Nelson Avenue it goes to Monticello Terrace to Cleveland Avenue. It then continues along Cleveland Avenue to Nash Court.
* 369th Regiment Memorial Day Parade
This parade generally occurs on the third Sunday in May (in 2011, that will be May 15.) The parade route is along 5th Avenue in Manhattan, from 61st Street to 86th Street. Starting time is 1:00 PM.
PARADES HELD ON SUNDAY, MAY 29, 2011
* Greenpoint Memorial Day Parade
Residents of Brooklyn and visitors to this borough can observe or participate in this parade on Sunday, May 29, 2011. The route follows Manhattan Avenue from Driggs Avenue to Milton Street. St. Stanislaus Memorial Post 1771 can provide more information if you need it.
* Forest Hills Memorial Day Parade
This parade in the Queens borough is also held the Sunday before Memorial Day (in 2011, it's May 29. The route for this parade will start at Metropolitan Avenue and Alderton Street at 12:00 noon.
PARADES HELD ON MONDAY, MAY 30, 2011:
* Laurelton Memorial Day Parade
Start your Memorial Day off in Queens with this parade, which will start at 9:00 AM. The route starts at Francis Lewis and Merrick Boulevards.
* Pelham Memorial Day Parade
If you live in or are visiting The Bronx, you can watch this parade when it starts at 10:00 AM. It starts at the Esplanade and Wolfs Lane. For more information, you can contact American Legion Post 50.
* Kings County Memorial Day Parade
Brooklyn is the location for this parade, which will start at 11:00 AM. The parade route begins at 3rd Avenue and 79th Street.
* Staten Island Veterans Memorial Day Parade
Catch the Staten Island Ferry before 11:00 AM so that you can watch this parade. It will start at Forest Avenue and go from there to Hart Boulevard and then to Crystal Avenue. Inwood Memorial Day Parade.
* Inwood Memorial Day Parade
Those residents of Manhattan, or visitors to this borough, can watch this parade at 12:00 noon. It starts at Dyckman Street and Broadway.
