New York City has guided tours for TV and movie locations, famous landmarks, famous restaurants, distinctive neighborhoods—you name a category and there's probably an organized tour for it. This includes hip-hop tours.
Hip-hop is a music genre that relies heavily on rap (speaking words to a rhythm) and break dancing. Another thing that delineates hip-hop from other music types is the emphasis on graffiti. As a general rule, it's illegal to "tag"—a word used to describe the act of writing words or drawing pictures on buildings, sidewalks, and other surfaces—but the popularity of hip-hop has given rise to some places where "tagging" is allowed.
Hip-hop is said to have gotten its start in the inner city environment, so where better to conduct hip-hop tours in New York City's inner-city areas? Organized hip-hop tours that are safe and well planned out are available in New York City so that you can get the maximum enjoyment out of them.
Many hip-hop tours are guided by local hip-hop artists; on occasion, a celebrity hip-hop artist may join the tour or make an appearance at the end of it.
What do the tours include?
That depends on the type of tour you choose. For example, one tour may take you to places where graffiti artists have actually been allowed to create their works of art. In some of these places, you may see a graffiti artist working on a new mural or drawing.
One of the tours that take you to see graffiti is called the "Writing on the Wall Hip-Hop Tour of NYC". The tour is conducted on Mondays at 12:00 PM (noon) and on Sundays at 4:30 PM. You travel by subway to get to the different places where graffiti is displayed, which makes this tour even more enjoyable.
Another tour may take you to one of the other boroughs of New York City. Brooklyn is one of them, and you can take a "Where Brooklyn at?" tour. This particular tour concentrates on hip-hop music as it was performed in the '90s. It is offered on Thursdays at 1:00 PM.
The Queens hip-hop tour "The Bridge" is another tour that takes place in one of New York City's boroughs. This tour specializes in presenting hip-hop music as it was performed during the '80s. Enjoy this tour on any Saturday at 4:00 PM.
